The UK government have now announced people will be required to wear face coverings while using public transport from Monday June 15th.

The news was announced by the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps during today’s coronavirus daily briefing at Downing Street.

Shapps said people can be refused travel or fined if they do not wear a face covering while on buses, trains, aircraft and ferries.

The new measure will coincide with the re-opening of schools for secondary students and non-essential retail on the same date, which Shapps said is likely to add “more pressure” to public transport.

Shapps said “face coverings offer some – albeit limited – protection”, adding that “we need to ensure every precaution is taken.”
