As part of the company’s efforts to rebrand, Facebook is looking to change its name, according to reports.
Citing a source, Verge reported that Facebook will change its name next week “to reflect its focus on building the metaverse” – which has described by Facebook as “a set of virtual spaces where you can create and explore with other people who aren’t in the same physical space as you.”
In a post from September titled ‘Building the Metaverse Responsibly‘, Facebook said the metaverse will allow people “to hang out with friends, work, play, learn, shop, create and more.”
It’s expected the rebrand will place the Facebook app as one of many products – alongside Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus – under a parent company.
The name change will reportedly be revealed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook’s annual Connect conference on October 28th.
Until then, the new name will remain “a closely-guarded secret” which hasn’t even been shared with those in senior positions at the company, according to The Verge.
