Following a weekend of chaos and upheaval in the regular sports coverage on BBC, they have now apologised for the ordeal and announced that Gary Lineker will return to Match Of The Day this weekend.
Lineker was told to take a step back from presenting the Saturday night staple, after his tweets about the new Conservative migrant policy allegedly broke BBC impartiality rules.
A domino effect soon followed, with his regular pundits Alan Shearer and Ian Wright both announcing they won’t appear in solidarity, before the programme aired with no pundits or commentators whatsoever.
Tim Davie, BBC director general, has said in a statement today, “Everyone recognises this has been a difficult period for staff, contributors, presenters and, most importantly, our audiences. I apologise for this.”
Gary Lineker has taken to social media to release his own statement too, where he wrote, “After a surreal few days, I’m delighted that we have navigated a way through this.
“I want to thank you all for the incredible support, particularly my colleagues at BBC Sport, for the remarkable show of solidarity. Football is a team game but their backing was overwhelming.”
Although not included in the initial statement from BBC, it is believed that Lineker will also receive a personal and direct apology.
