Introducing Finalist #3 – Culprit

Culprit is heading the new breed of artists in the birth place of grime, Bow E3. Having already established a name for himself in the scene, he’s begun to showcase his versatility of late, produced a raw UK influenced sound. With a largely varied portfolio to hand, Culprit is definitely one to watch out for, and firmly deserves his place.

Check out Culprit’s interview below:

COMING FROM BOW, YOU FEEL LIKE THERE’S PRESSURE TO EMULATE WHAT THE OLDER GENERATION HAVE ACHIEVED IN PREVIOUS YEARS?

Yeah, I think so, definitely. Nobody wants to be from Bow and be a dead rapper.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE GUILTY PLEASURE?

Nebu Kiniza, he’s got a weird voice, it’s weird music but it’s good music.

WHO’S YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL INFLUENCE?

Skepta, just because of the journey he’s been on as well as the music and legacy he’s created.

WHAT WOULD WINNING MEAN TO YOU?

A lot. I feel like I put so much work into music. I’m turning 17 this week, but I’ve been rapping for like 3-4 years – I know it’s not long but I feel like I’ve put in so much work and so far I haven’t got that much back from it, so the award would be some recognition. Plus, my mum’s never liked my music that much either, so the award would show her that people take me seriously.

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF LAST YEAR’S RATED AWARDS AND WHAT DID THEY MEAN FOR THE SCENE?

I think they represent that there is good music coming from the underground grime scene. It’s a good event to show the world that there’s quality music coming from it.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE KA FLAVOUR?

What did I just get? Black grape. Black grape definitely.
