Thankfully deaths don’t actually happen that often on the football pitch. However, there’s recently been a tragic accident in the Indonesian top division.
Goalkeeper Choirul Huda died shortly over colliding with his team-mate during a match. His club Persela FC released a statement in which they confirmed that he had suffered “impacts on the chest and lower jaw”.
The collision had caused Huda to stop breathing and consequently he went into cardiac arrest. Attempts were made to revive him but proved unsuccessful.
The match did continue and his team overcame Semen Padang beating them 2-0.
A candlelit vigil, which was attended by thousands of fans, was later held to honour the memory of Choirul Huda, who had amassed 500 caps living the dream by playing for the club he’d grown up watching.
