Netflix is reportedly eyeing a potential Grand Theft Auto (GTA) game for its growing Netflix Games service, marking its ambition to expand further into the gaming industry.
The company is said to be in discussions with Take-Two Interactive, the game’s publisher, about securing a licensing deal for a new addition to the series on its platform, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.
At this stage, the game would likely be a mobile version, as Netflix Games currently resides within the mobile app.
Their long-term vision is to offer games that can be streamed on TVs and PCs. The company has already invested approximately $1 billion in games and is actively recruiting game executives for AAA titles.
However, the success of their gaming endeavours remains uncertain. Since its introduction, the games have been downloaded a total of 70.5 million times, indicating a moderate level of engagement compared to other mobile titles.
Moreover, less than 1% of Netflix subscribers are estimated to play its games daily, which may be because many of its premium titles are accessible elsewhere.
While a GTA game could draw significant attention, it remains to be seen how Netflix’s gaming initiative will ultimately perform, especially if Grand Theft Auto 6 or other major releases elsewhere overshadow its offerings.
