Staff Picks is back for another week, bringing you another eclectic mix of bangers that have been in heavy rotation in the office.
Drillminister – Brexit
At a time where drill music is being viewed under a microscopic lens, Drillminister took a thought- provoking approach to express his opinion on the matter. His powerful new track “Brexit” where he addresses what the consequences of Brexit could be with a slick drilly-like flow over a skippy beat.
“Drillminsiter is informing the listeners whilst laying down bars over a drill beat and not a lot of people can do that. He’s created a new movement of drill and deserves nothing but respect. He really gives us something” – Nic Coaker (Writer) (@Niccoaker)
6ix9ine – KIKA Feat. Tory Lanez
Following an eventful past couple week for 6ix9ine released his long-awaited album Dummy Boy which people have seemingly taken a liking to. With Tory Lanez on the hook, “KIKA” is one of the more melodic tracks but nonetheless sees Tekashi spitting the high-energy bars we’re used to.
“I’ve been very surprised that I’ve enjoyed Dummy Boy as much as I have and “KIKA” for me is the best track from it. 6ix9ine and Tory Lanez go back to back and the beat is crazy because it’s produced by the legend that is Scott Storch” – Mehul Bhatt (Writer) (thisismehul_)
Meek Mill – 24/7 Feat. Ella Mai
Fresh off Meek Mill’s Championships album, “24/7” is saucy track where Meek Mill slows it down and gets romantic with the help of Ella Mai. Sampling Beyonce’s “Me, Myself and I”, Meek Mill is heartfelt and assertive in his lyrics. A track the ladies will love.
“I love a hood love tune and this is it; sick sample, sick vocals. It’s lit” – Shante Collier-McDermott (Writer) (@shancolls)
Ski Mask the Slump God – Foot Fungus
In Ski Mask the Slump God’s track “Foot Fungus”, Ski Mask keeps it fun whilst still laying down some fire bars. With several changes of flow and an upbeat instrumental, “Foot Fungus” proves to be a catchy tune. Off his latest project STOKELEY, “Foot Fungus” is not too long in length, at only 2 minutes running time.
“There’s a few standout tracks on Ski Mask the Slump God’s new release, the whole project is absolutely worth a spin, but for me “Foot Fungus” is that track that’s gonna get stuck in your head and make you wanna go back and replay it. With its catchy backing instrumental, it’s my favourite from the album” – Alice Moodle (Writer) (@musicmoodie)
Jammz – Lemonade Man
Jammz spits in his slick, sharp style on new track “Lemonade Man”. The self-assuring hook is both catchy and relatable, seeing Jammz talking about people trying to mirror his style. Donning a yellow jacket that’s well in line with the track name, Jammz is seen in several scenes by himself spitting very organically.
“Hackney bred MC Jammz graced us this past week with the sequel and return of Warrior 2. If that wasn’t enough, a release of hard, vibrant visuals for his bonus track titled “Lemonade Man” hit our screens too. Incredibly shot and directed by Global Before Local, the song which is self-produced by him and a few others; shows a transition of the visuals that reflect the demeanour of the song perfectly. One of the best ‘Jams’ to feature on the EP! (pun intended)”- Amal Al Tauqi (Writer) (@altxuqi)
Dappy – All We Know Feat. Ambush & Asco
The “All We Know RMX” sees Dappy enlist Asco and Ambush to put their spin on the melodic banger. The beat is sweet sounding, making use of many high tones. Both Ambush and Asco slow it down on this one, with reflective bars. Paired alongside sleek, vibrant visuals, it all fits together well.
“During a time where we’re being inundated with remixes, it really takes a good one to stand out. “All We Know” sees one of the UK’s original melodic rap flag bearers Dappy bring much needed lyrical firepower to the track by including both Asco and Ambush; who bring the flames with their guest verses.” – Seth P (Features Editor) (@writersblog88)
Kamakaze – The Weatherman
“The Weatherman” is Kamakaze’s latest banger. With clever bars from the outset, Kam is seen on his lonesome in the video. The visuals use different angles and scenes allowing the bars to be fully taken in. Superstar producer Faze Miyake is the name behind this subtly hard-hitting beat which proves to be the perfect beat for the Leicester MC to shower down on.
“Leicester grime MC Kamakaze, who is also a professional footballer has done bits on and off the pitch this weekend. He has linked up with the seminal hitmaker Faze Miyake, one of the greasiest grime producers the contemporary scene has to offer for a cold new banger “The Weatherman”. Kam can celebrate doubly as hard with him scoring a last-minute winner for Dagenham and Redbridge FC against Hartepool, and for the release of his cool “Weatherman” music video which dropped on Friday” – Mike Spyrou (Writer) (@spizzgeta)
