Indoor gyms, pools and other sport facilities have slowly reopened across England today.

Gyms and other facilities must adhere to social distancing measures and new hygiene regimes in order to protect equipment users.

Machines and equipment have to be distanced, class sizes have to be reduced, changing rooms and the use of showers should be discouraged and “adequate” ventilation should be provided.

Oliver Dowden, the Culture Secretary said, “The reopening of gyms is the news millions across the country have been waiting for with many people desperate to jump on a spinning bike or dive into a pool.”

“Helping people return to gyms safely will also help the nation get match-fit to defeat this virus.”

The reopening of gyms comes days after Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed the importance of losing weight for a healthy lifestyle.

Boris said, “Obesity is one of the real co-morbidity factors. Losing weight, frankly, is one of the ways you can reduce your own risk from coronavirus.”

Boris is also expected to announce new government measures next week too which include banning online ads for junk food, limiting store promotions and discounts on healthy items and banning adverts for fast food until after the watershed (9pm).
