In 1987 Tinker Hatfield Jr, who has designed many of Nike’s most popular and innovative athletic shoes to date, made a trip Paris that would revolutionalise trainers forever.
As a great architect Hatfield was immediately drawn to the Pompidou Centre, a building turnt inside inside out. Following his return from Paris he decided to play with the idea of have the classically designed air bubble exposed rather than enclosed in the shoe, contrary to his 1978 designs such as the Nike Air Tailwind.
Thus creating the birth of the Air Max 1…

Then came the Nike Air Max 95, a game changer inspired by human body. The show design experimented with new cushioning materials.

This was followed by the Nike Air Max 97 with a fully exposed air bubble, use of reflective materials and design inspired by Tokyoʼs fast bullet trains.

The Nike Air Max 2003 was made with lighter, more flexible materials.

The Nike Air 360 had improved air cushioning:

The Nike Air Max 2015 Light was designed to be breathable; the upper sole had new mesh materials.
