YouTube is currently re-evaluating the way it “judges records” after a rapper broke the platform’s record for most views in a day, according to reports.
Indian rapper Badshah gained 75 million views in a day after releasing his single “Paagal”.
South Korean boyband BTS broke the record back in April after racking up 74.6 million views in 24 hours and the group were congratulated by YouTube for doing so but YouTube are still yet to confirm Badshah’s achievement.
Badshah believes YouTube have not reached out to him because they are choosing not to acknowledge his music.
It’s been reported that the rapper and Sony were able to break the record by buying ad space which embedded the music or redirected users to the video. Many other major pop artists have also used this method to maximise their views.
However, sources close to YouTube have said the platform is now re-thinking the way in which it assesses records.
Speaking on his record, Badshah said: “We worked hard for this, promoted it worldwide.
“I don’t want people abroad to see India like it’s shown in a film like Slumdog Millionaire (2008). We are at par with the world. And it’s our time to shine.”
