Social media’s effect on mental health is constantly taking over news headlines in recent times and now it’s Instagram’s latest augmented reality (AR) filters that are the main cause for concern.
Over the past month or so, Instagram have been adding a lot of new features onto their app. From removing the activity section of the app to adding new filters, these changes have been receiving a lot of criticism. Concerns have been raised as a result of the new AR filters, with research suggesting that those face-changing filters can effect the way that people feel about their image.
The new effects can dramatically change a users face, making it appear that they have undergone cosmetic surgery including lip fillers or a facelift. The new effects came to the Facebook-owned app following an update which allowed users to create their own filters.
A spokesperson for Instagram said: “While we’re re-evaluating our policies, we will remove all effects from the [effects] gallery associated with plastic surgery, stop further approval of new effects like this and remove current effects if they’re reported to us.”
Always looking at ways to make the platform more user-friendly, Instagram are also considering removing likes, find out more here on GRM Daily.
