At a virtual event yesterday (June 22), Apple announced features coming to its devices later on this year.
The features were announced at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) and gave us a glimpse of what’s to come when iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and Watch OS 7 are released as free updates later this year.
Among the chages to iOS14 are widgets on the main home screen, Siri on the home screen as well as an App Library which will enable users to view all of their installed apps in a list view and will automatically categorise apps. There will also be some changes to iMessage, such as pinned messages as well as @-mentions.
One of the biggest features to be announced for iOS 14 is the contactless CarKey feature which will allow iPhones to unlock a car using near-field communication, with the 2021 BMW 5 series being the first car to support it. The feature will be introduced on both iOS 13 and iOS 14.
iOS 14 will also see the introduction of Apple’s translating app as well as App Clips in the App Store which will enable users to gain access to some functions of an app without downloading the full app.
During the conference, iPad OS 14 details were revealed including sidebars on most first-party apps, improvements to Universal Search and a Scribble feature which will allow users to convert handwriting into text in any field.
Apple’s Watch OS 7 update will include more customisation features for watch faces, a redesigned and renamed Workout app – to be called Fitness – a sleep tracker, new alarms and a hand-washing detector.
