The Bank of Ireland confronted a crisis as a major IT glitch led to widespread chaos this week, with thousands of customers flocking to cashpoints to withdraw “free” money that wasn’t theirs.
The glitch allowed customers to withdraw funds exceeding their account balances, prompting queues at ATMs in Dublin, Limerick and Navan.
Gardai were dispatched to manage the situation as videos of individuals making extravagant purchases with apparent impunity circulated online.
The bank acknowledged an app and personal banking website issue, urging caution against withdrawals that could lead to overdrafts.
Bank officials have since resolved the issue, expressing apologies for the disruption and assuring efforts to maintain a high-quality service.
