The nominations for this year’s Ivor Novello awards have been announced and some familiar big names are among the nominees.

The Ivors is a celebration of “creative excellence in songwriting and screen composition” and this year, it has recognised 35 individual songwriters across a number of categories.

Dave and J Hus have been nominated for Best Contemporary Song for their respective tracks “Black” and Must Be”. The pair are up against Kate Tempest’s “Firesmoke”.

North London’s very own Little Simz has also been recognised and has been nominated for Best Album with her 2019 LP, Grey Area.

Stormzy is also up for a nomination in the Best Song Musically & Lyrically category for his single, “Crown”, which is taken from his critically-acclaimed Heavy Is The Head album.

Nominated for Best Television Soundtrack is singer-songwriter and record producer Labrinth who has been recognised for his efforts for composing the Euphoria soundtrack.

Speaking on the 2020 awards, Chair of The Ivors Academy – Crispin Hunt: said: “Our judges have recognised extraordinary works that reflect on all aspects of the human experience and demonstrate the power and importance of music, in all its forms. Everything begins with the creativity of the songwriter or composer, and this is the building block on which our industry rests.

“That is why these awards are so important because they celebrate this craft and talent. It is also fantastic to see nearly half of those recognised today nominated for an Ivor Novello Award for the very first time. Congratulations to everyone.”

Over 40 award-winning songwriters and composers, including past Ivor winners and nominees, make up separate panels to judge each category.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the ceremony for the 2020 Ivors is unable to go ahead and instead, the winners will be announced on September 2 by Matt Wilkinson on Beats 1 radio at 11am.
