Time waits for no man, unless you’re called Joe James.
The Essex rhymer has returned with his third EP of 2023 in the form of 9. His new six-track project comes just seven days after James gifted us with 6, and 3 on January 6th.
Keeping in line with 6’s lonesome approach, James rhymes over an eclectic, soul-tinged beat cluster. Highlight “Evil Scientist” is a mellow, saxophone-driven number. The song sees James discuss the deaths of Mark Duggan, Stephen Lawrence and Dr. Sebi, as well as police brutality, over a bellowing kick drum.
The EP closer “Code Of Honour” is supported by an entrancing soul sample, juxtaposed by James’ dry sense of humour and blunt wordplay.
The coming-of-age heater “Cuts & Bruises” also gets the visual treatment. Kitted out in a rust-orange Stone Island two-piece, the rapper sits on his bike and spits bars amidst the jade-green wilderness.
After three EPs this month alone, we’re pretty sure James will be back with more music soon. Being both a prolific artist and a top-tier wordsmith, Joe James is definitely an artist worthy of keeping your eye on.
