Oscar-nominated director John Singleton has sadly passed away at the age of 51.

Singleton was taken to intensive care almost two weeks ago after suffering from a stroke but was taken off of life support earlier today (29 April).

A spokesperson for the family of John Singleton released a statement to announce their decision to take him off of life support.

“It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today.

“This was an agonising decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors.”

The film-maker rose to fame after writing and directing the critically-acclaimed Boyz N The Hood in 1991  – a film which saw John Singleton become the first black nominee for the Academy Award for Best director.

Singleton then went on to direct and produce a number of popular movies and TV shows including 2 Fast 2 Furious and the popular series Snowfall.
