Kanye West now wants to legally change his name to his longtime nickname, ‘Ye’.

The U.S. rapper has filed court documents to officialy change his name from Kanye Omari West to simply Ye for “personal reasons”, but he didn’t elaborate any further.

For the name change to become official, it has to be approved by a California judge.

For years, Kanye has been nicknamed Ye and in 2018 he named his eighth studio album after the abbreviated version of his name.

He also hinted at officially changing his name on Twitter, writing: “the being formally known as Kanye West […] I am YE.”

In an interview with Big Boy around the same time, Kanye spoke on the name Ye in more depth.

“I believe ‘ye’ is the most commonly used word in the Bible and in the Bible, it means ‘you’,” West said of the album’s title.

“So I’m you, I’m us, it’s us. It went from Kanye, which means the only one, to just Ye — just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confusion, everything. The album is more of a reflection of who we are.”

News of Kanye’s name change comes as he gears up for the release of his hugely-anticipated album, DONDA, which has been pushed back a number of times.
