Real Madrid and France national team football star Karim Benzema has been under formal investigation this week, for his involvement in a sex tape blackmail case against French team mate Mathieu Valbuena. Today, Sky Sports News are reporting that he has been charged with conspiracy to blackmail and participating in a criminal group.
Benzema was allegedly trying to extort money from Valbuena. He told investigators that he approached him about the tape on behalf of a “childhood friend”.
Before France games against Armenia and Denmark, Benzema pressed Valbuena to pay the blackmailers. Initially it was believed he was offering friendly advice, but this most recent news implies a much deeper conspiracy is at work.
With France hosting the 2016 Euro tournament, it seems very unlikely that Benzema will feature.
