Kendrick Lamar and Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith (CEO of Top Dawg Entertainment) have just been confirmed as the producers behind the soundtrack to Black Panther which is set to release in the UK in February this year.
Black Panther has received buzzing anticipation since Marvel first confirmed in 2014 that it would be making the first black superhero fronted film in history to also feature nearly an all black cast. Considering the film’s strong connotations with black empowerment, it makes perfect sense that Kendrick Lamar was hand-picked by the film’s director Ryan Coogler to lead the soundtrack alongside label boss Anthony Tiffith.
Lamar has become almost synonymous with black empowerment in the music industry, being an artist that has always expressed his views on race issues in the US in his music. Speaking on his involvement Lamar said, “Marvel Studios’ Black Panther is amazing, from its cast to its director. The magnitude of this film showcases a great marriage of art and culture.”
Black Panther: The Album is set to be 14 tracks long and will feature music from the Black Panther film, including lead single “All The Stars” featuring fellow TDE member SZA which was just unveiled on Lamar’s YouTube page today. Lamar’s involvement in the film’s soundtrack will also make it the first time the rapper has written, produced, performed and curated for a major Hollywood motion picture.
