Kyla was in the Radio 1Xtra studio recently to talk to Trevor Nelson about working with Drake on his new single “One Dance”.
Drake and his Anglophilia is so well documented by this point, but things took an even more interesting turn when he sampled Kyla and Crazy Cousinz 2008 hit “Do You Know”.
She at first thought the whole thing was a joke saying, “I got a call a while back, and I was getting loads of emails,” Kyla said over the phone to Trevor. “To be honest, I was really bad and kept putting them aside like ‘I’ll call later’. You know how it is, sometimes we’ve had things come in and they fall through at the last minute. When we phoned, the company said ‘a huge international star wants to sample your tune and they wanna have a meeting with you’. I was like ‘yeah ok, who?’ and when they said Drake I was like ‘yeah right. YEAH RIGHT!’ We signed papers and I still didn’t believe it. I had a feeling someone was gonna say to me ‘April Fools’ on Friday.”
Kyla also said she had been taking a break from music, having gotten married and had a baby, but had just started recording new music when Drizzy came calling. She said, “It’s nice because I was just starting to get back into everything, and I was in the studio doing some work so when I got the call from Drake’s team it was a perfect thing to set me off.”
She also ended up as a featured artist on the track, not just a credited sample. “They said they wanted it to be a sample at first,” she said. “That’s what they originally contacted me for, then when we got on the phone and had chats, they were like ‘how would you like to be a feature instead?’”
