The jury is out on the rehabilitative effects of jail. Many people who end up in prison often do return, due to there being a lack of resources available both inside, and outside of prison. Educating and providing much needed mental health treatments for offenders is often flouted in exchange for punishment.
Lengthy custodial sentences is the governments weapon of choice when faced with criminal activity. Granted, that is most certainly necessary in some cases, but exploring the reasons why people offend, and steering them away from that path is arguably the best antidote. Giving them the resources they often lacked, like education and mental health treatment can help broaden their horizons and set them straight.
Layers is just that, a collection of stories from people who have been on the difficult journey of getting back on their feet after being incarcerated. Directed by Lee Christopher Page & Micquel Wright, featuring first hand accounts from Rimzee, Mist and Jaykae, amongst many others. The aim is to peel back the layers behind why people end up in prison, and help others avoid the same pitfalls.
