Liz Truss addressed the nation this afternoon and announced her resignation as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
The announcement comes after a tumultuous start to her leadership, which began less than two full months – 45 days – ago, making her the shortest serving Prime Minister in history.
Controversy has been swirling internally for weeks both in Parliament and in the general public, as the country faces a cost of living crisis. Last night calls for Truss to resign hit a tipping point after dramatic scenes at the House of Commons during a vote on fracking.
She said in her address, “I recognise… given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”
“I will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen,” she added.
Leader of the opposition Labour party, Keir Starmer, has called for immediate action and a general election to take place “now”.
