Three and EE have become the first UK mobile operators to agree to provide 4G and 5G across the entire London Underground network.

Both Three and EE penned a deal with BAI communications which will allow customers of the two operators to make phone calls or stream videos in tunnels, ticket halls and stations.

Since March 2020, 4G has been piloted on the east end of the Jubilee Line and it’s expected coverage will be covered across the entire London Underground network by 2024.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I’m delighted to see Three and EE sign up as the first operators to provide full high-speed 4G access across the Tube network.

“This will make a huge difference to passengers, allowing them to make calls, read emails and check travel information while on the move.

“Investing in London’s connectivity and digital infrastructure is one important way we are helping to stimulate our city’s economy. It also represents a significant step towards ensuring the whole tube network has 5G-ready mobile coverage.”

TfL hopes Vodafone and O2 will sign up to provide 4G and 5G in the future.
