ITV’s popular Love Island summer series for this year has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The show’s bosses at ITV confirmed the cancellation of this year’s summer series in a statement today (May 4), saying it would be impossible to create the show “in a way that safeguards the wellbeing of everyone involved” following the outbreak of COVID-19.

ITV’s director of television, Kevin Lygo said:
“We have tried every which way to make Love Island this summer but logistically it’s just not possible to produce it in a way that safeguards the wellbeing of everyone involved and that for us is the priority,” Lygo said in a statement.

“In normal circumstances we would be preparing very soon to travel out to the location in Mallorca to get the villa ready but clearly that’s now out of the question.

“We are very sorry for fans of the show but making it safely is our prime concern and Love Island will be back stronger than ever in 2021.”

News of the cancellation of Love Island’s summer series comes months after the first ever winter edition of the show aired this year, where Laura Whitmore made her debut as the presenter of the hit series.

Whitmore has also commented on the cancelled series, promising fans that next year’s season will be “BIG”.
