South London’s very own Loyle Carner has made his long-awaited return to music with a new single dubbed “Hate”.
With lyrics such as “I fear the colour of my skin/ I fear the colour of my kin”, “Hate” is a powerful offering from Loyle who speaks on the modern experience of being Black and British, while also exploring the relationship between hate and fear.
“One of the few songs made from a hateful place,” Loyle said when speaking on the making of the track. “I was angry at the world, frightened and overwhelmed. It’s unfiltered. Really just a stream of consciousness that builds to an understanding that hate is rooted in fear.
“It reminds me of times the red mist takes over, and how alone you feel when the rest mist passes. Arrogant and self-righteous but at the same time vulnerable and somber.”
“Hate” is Loyle’s first solo offering since releasing “Yesterday” back in 2020. While he’s generally remained pretty off the grid since then, he’s made a few cameos such as on Swindle’s “Lost”, and also at Wireless Festival this past weekend where he came out to perform with Knucks.
With “Hate”, Loyle officially cements his return and you can take in the striking video for the track above.
