Usually, you see a disclaimer in text at the start of a drill music video. “Everything you see is strictly for entertainment purposes”, or something along those lines. In M24’s latest single, “John Wick”, he says it himself.
Standing in the midst of a sea of firearm-toting police officers, he looks straight into the camera and states his innocence. Then the beat drops, and suddenly M24 is in a room resembling a Call of Duty loading screen. Surrounded by guns and wearing a balaclava, he offers a stripped-back version of the realities of a turbulent lifestyle.
The song itself is M24 at his best. His trademark delivery and adlibs shine through, and his flow and bars are even tighter than usual. Rapping that he feels like “John Wick” because of the money on his head, he illustrates a world reminiscent of Nines’ “Crabs in the Bucket” analogy. Life doesn’t simply get easier when you blow up; instead, you’re just faced with a whole host of new challenges.
