Tributes Pour In After Producer Dubbed ‘Godfather of Birmingham Music’ Major Passes Away

Artists and figures from within the music scene have paid tribute to Birmingham producer, Major, who passed away on Thursday (January 7) from an illness.

Major – real name Winston Mendez – was a producer and mentor from Balsall Heath who worked with young people in music across Birmingham, playing an instrumental role in the growth of the city’s scene.

The likes of Lady Leshurr Jaykae, Dapz On The Map, P110 Media and many more have taken to social media to pay tribute to Major.

“Today we lost a very important person in Birmingham,” Lady Leshurr wrote on Twitter. “The glue & superhero to most mcs in brum. A good hearted man that always helped everyone 1st.

“When I was younger he let me record in his studio & taught me so much without even knowing it.This loss has burnt me #RIPMAJOR.”

Grantley Haynes, friend of Major and CEO of Grantley records, said: “Major was an inspiration. he was very, very loyal. A gentleman.

“He was a youth worker and inspired the young people he worked with at Matthew Boulton College and the Pump. He was a friend.”

Alison Cope, the mother of the late Depzman, added: β€œHe was a huge influence to many young people across Birmingham. A true gentleman and positive.

β€œHe was one of the first people to help my son and he helped may many people for many years.

β€œHe was respected, loved and there for many people.”
