Unfortunately, there have been more reports of racial abuse from football fans targeted towards players.
The Brazilian united star player Fred is said to have been one of the players that were targeted with monkey gestures during the match between both Manchester teams at Cities Etihad stadium yesterday.
City published a statement detailing that they were “aware of a video circulating on social media which appears to show a supporter making racial gestures.”
City then added the following, “The club operates a zero-tolerance policy regarding discrimination of any kind, and anyone found guilty of racial abuse will be banned from the club for life.”
During this match, there were also reports of missiles being thrown from the stands. Police are now working with City to investigate both issues mentioned. This happened as United midfielder Fred went to take a corner during the second half of the game and appeared to be hit by an object launched from the stands.
Fred gave the following statement after the match. He said, “On the field, I didn’t see anything. I saw it only in the locker room afterwards. The guys showed me. A man even threw a lighter and it hit me.”
Following these reports, a man has now been arrested in relation to these offences. The 41-year-old is currently being held on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order.
