With the FIFA World Cup creeping up on us, it has been announced that marijuana, cocaine and heroin will be allowed into the stadium; but it’s not as straight forward as you think.
Russia is the host of the 2018 FIFA World Cup which kicks off mid-June and sees 32 international football teams battle it out to win the World Cup trophy. However, Russia doesn’t seem to be sticking to the usual World Cup practices as they have today announced that football fans will be allowed to take illegal drugs into the stadium; including marijuana, cocaine and heroin.
Whilst it sounds like fun and games, taking the drugs into the stadium will be fairly complicated. The drugs will require supporting medical documents, written in the Russian language alongside them. To monitor this, law enforcement officers will be on duty to verify the authenticity of the prescriptions.
Speaking of the matter, Russia’s 2018 World Cup Organising Committee said, “Security officers will monitor the enforcement of rules for carrying prescription drugs to stadium grounds at checkpoints.”
According to to the regulations in place by The Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union, the list of permitted drugs which travellers can take into the country includes cocaine, cannabis and heroin.
Although, it’s quite unheard of that anyone in the UK has been prescribed cocaine for medical reasons, countries such as Australia, Canada and Germany do prescribe the Class A drug.
