An armed officer of the Metropolitan Police force has today admitted to dozens of rape and sexual offences against 12 different women.

The offender, 48 year-old David Carrick, had already come to the attention of police over nine incidents between 2000 and 2021, but no action was taken.

The Met’s lead for professionalism, Assistant Commissioner Barbara Gray, said, “We should have spotted his pattern of abusive behaviour and because we didn’t, we missed opportunities to remove him from the organisation.

“We are truly sorry that being able to continue to use his role as a police officer may have prolonged the suffering of his victims.

“We know they felt unable to come forward sooner because he told them they would not be believed.”

Carrick admitted 24 counts of rape, after reportedly using dating websites and apps to access his victims and was arrested back in October 2021.

Most of his offences took place in Hertfordshire, where he would control the women he abused, even going as far as preventing them from speaking to their own children.

The hearing is still ongoing.
