Video games are not cheap to produce. and recent years have seen new ones be developed with budgets closer to that of a blockbuster Hollywood movie.
Games like Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Halo 5: Guardians are estimated to have each cost 100’s of millions of pounds each, but a new title in development looks set to top them all as the most expensive video game ever made.
According to a report by Gamerficial, the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI may end up costing around $1 billion, when taking into account the game’s marketing expenses.
The report suggests that the development budget for the game could be around $250 million alone. However, a previous leak indicated that the budget could be even higher, closer to $2 billion, which would also include the game’s distribution costs.
If either of these figures is accurate, it would make Grand Theft Auto VI the most expensive video game ever made.
While much of the information about its budget is still speculative, gamers are eagerly anticipating its release, hoping that it will live up to their high expectations.
It remains to be seen whether the game will be able to meet the high bar set by its predecessors, but with potentially record-breaking funding behind it, fans are eagerly awaiting new developments.
