Earlier this year, we reported on Motorola’s plans to release an updated version of its classic Razr flip phone and now more details of the device have been revealed.
Coming fifteen years after the original, the new Razr phone will feature a 6.2 inch foldable screen, alongside a smaller screen on the outer shell which will display notifications when the phone is closed.
As well as being a nod to the old-school, the new Razr also serves as a groundbreaking device as it will be the first flip phone to feature a foldable screen.
The device will be available to buy in the States from December 26th at the price of $1500, before being released in other countries at later dates.
Speaking on the new device to the BBC, the head of product development at Motorola – Glenn Schultz – said: “With the new Razr we had to rethink how to engineer a phone.”
“Our zero-gap hinge allowed us to bring to market a device that folds completely in half. Many didn’t believe we could do it, but let me tell you, it’s fun to work on something that everyone thinks is impossible.”
First released in 2004, the original Motorola Razr was a hit for the company, becoming the world’s best-selling flip phone with over 130 million sold within two years. The device was endorses by celebrities across the world, including footballing legend David Beckham.
Will the new Razr be just as popular? Time will tell.
