Manchester United have sacked José Mourinho after a spate of poor results, including the latest 3-1 loss to Liverpool.

Mourinho, 55, took over in May 2016 and led United to League Cup and Europa League titles, but they are a staggering 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool. This makes it the club’s worst start in 28 years.

A United statement said: “A caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.

“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.”

As well as a new manager, a head of football is to be appointed with a reformed philosophy that focuses on the attacking tradition of the club.
