The good news just keeps coming in. British residents have been warned by the chief executive of the National Grid, John Pettigrew, that we could be facing blackouts during the cold winter evenings.
On top of the cost of living crisis at the moment, supplies of gas and electric could run low, to which he said the solution would be rolling blackouts “probably between 4pm and 7pm in the evenings on those weekdays when it’s really, really cold in January and February”.
This was described as a worst case scenario and “unlikely” but still an eventuality that has been plotted out as plausible by experts, particularly if we face a spell of extremely cold weather.
Due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia has cut off one of its natural gas pipelines, that whilst we’re not dependent on it, has limited gas supply around the whole of Europe.
Families will be asked to cut down on there heating and electric usage, whilst an incentive scheme is likely to be set up as well.
Pettigrew reiterated that “a huge amount of work is being done” to protect the most vulnerable households through these tough times.
