After missing out on last week’s New Music playlist, we’re back this week with new Tinie Tempah & Jake Bugg, Gorillaz featuring Pusha T and Mavis Staples, Dave, French Montana and Swae Lee, Joey Bada$$ and Chronixx as well as brand new Desiigner. This week’s packing some serious bangers, so be sure to load up the tracks as you read along!
Tinie Tempah – Find Me (feat. Jake Bugg)
Jake Bugg sounds excellent on Tinie’s latest cut from his highly anticipated forthcoming album Youth. This is good, old-fashioned Discovery Tinie. The beat is simple and leaves plenty of space for Tinie’s storytelling bars as well as Jake Bugg’s impeccable vocal melody on the hooks. I can see this one really resonating with Tinie’s more commercially-glued fans, rather than his day-ones. The arrangement and production on “Find Me” is fantastic too, really special.
Gorillaz – Let Me Out (feat. Mavis Staples & Pusha T)
Damnit Pusha, how do you do it? As soon as the track opens with the G.O.O.D Music MC’s vocals you know you’re in for a treat. A minimalistic beat and a strange vocal line follow Pusha’s verse. The throwback Gorillaz sound is introduced about a minute into this track before Pusha delivers his second verse. “Let Me Out” is a dope new track from the new Gorillaz album, which I can’t wait for.
Dave – Revenge
Revenge is an 8-bit fuelled lament that sees Dave go hard, bar for bar, through the entire track. It’s everything you’d want from Dave – calm flows, witty wordplay and a great deal of sentiment. The whole idea behind “Revenge” is executed flawlessly. You can check out the awesome video for “Revenge” right here on GRM Daily. It’s great to see Dave follow up his 6 Paths project with some more dope music.
French Montana – Unforgettable (feat. Swae Lee)
Swae Lee kicks this track off with some Weeknd sounding vocals leading a beat with percussion similar to Drake’s “One Dance”. Don’t get it twisted, “Unforgettable” has a mind of its own – the vibe is crazy and French Montana’s vocal delivery is as cool as ever. The man can do no wrong.
Joey Bada$$ – Babylon (feat. Chronixx)
“Babylon” will fool you into thinking this is another Boom-Bap backed record. Instead, we’re treated to a great new cut with a smooth sung section and some typically hard Joey Bada$$ verses. Chronixx sounds incredible on “Babylon”; truly incredible. The drum break behind this track is mad, too. I think this might just be my track of the week!
Desiigner – Up
“Up” is Desiigner’s first proper release since the brilliant “Tiimmy Turner”, and it has more substance to it than “Panda” does. The beat is seriously minimal, but that’s not an issue here as Desiigner’s vocals really carry the song with some lamenting vocals that reek of ambition. “Up” is a hunger-driven record where Desiigner affirms his desire to succeed. The hook screams “Imma get rich, get rich!”
