The UK’s Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said a ‘new variant’ of coronavirus has been identified in the UK.
Speaking to the House of Commons, Mr Hancock said: “We have identified a new variant of coronavirus which may be associated with the faster spread in the south east of England.”
It’s believed the new variant is behind the faster spread of the virus in the South East regions of the country and has been reported in 60 local authority areas. It’s also said to be similar to that found in other countries in recent months.
Mr Hancock said there is “nothing to suggest” the new variant will cause serious disease at present, adding that it’s highly likely the new strain can be beaten by a vaccine.
