A new “game-changer” pill will soon be available to help tens of thousands of smokers in England quit.
The drug, varenicline, is expected to become a leading tool for smokers using NHS stop smoking services, as NHS England reports it may be as effective as vaping and more potent than nicotine patches or gum.
Taken daily, varenicline reduces nicotine cravings and the pleasurable effects of smoking, which can be crucial in preventing relapse. It also helps alleviate withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability and sleep issues, through a standard 12-week course. University College London estimates that this new pill could help over 85,000 smokers each year, potentially preventing up to 9,500 smoking-related deaths within five years.
A branded version of varenicline, Champix, was previously prescribed in the UK but was pulled by Pfizer in 2021 due to an impurity. Now, a generic version produced by Teva UK has been deemed safe by the Medicines Health and Regulatory Authority (MHRA).
Dr. Ian Walker of Cancer Research UK called the drug’s return “great news,” underscoring the importance of accessible tools for quitting.
Smoking remains a major public health issue in England, with six million smokers and 400,000 hospital admissions linked to smoking each year.
