In the past 24 hours, no new coronavirus deaths have been recorded in London for the first time since the early days following the outbreak of the virus.
NHS England did confirm a “small number of people” had died from COVID-19 over the weekend but their deaths have not yet been recorded. Their deaths are likely to be registered in the coming days.
According to data from the NHS, until today, London had seen coronavirus deaths every day from March 10.
The news comes after 55 new deaths were recorded across the UK in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll from COVID-19 to 49,597.
Speaking at today’s coronavirus daily briefing, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the latest figures suggest “coronavirus is in retreat across the country.”
