Notting Hill Carnival has officially been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

An official statement from its organisers was posted onto Twitter, confirming that the carnival will not take place on the streets of Notting Hill.

Organisers have said the decision was made “after lengthy consultations with our strategic partners and our advisory council”.

They added: “
This has not been an easy decision to make, but the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic and the way in which it has unfolded means that this is the only safe option. Everyone’s health has to come first.”

Despite this, they have said there are plans for an alternative carnival to take place to “bring the Carnival spirit to people from the safety of their homes, and make them feel connected and engaged.”

This is the first time NHC has been cancelled in its 54-year history, exhibiting the challenges large scale events are facing because of COVID-19.
