27-year-old boxer Patrick Day has passed away four days after suffering from a brain injury during a fight against Charles Conwell.

The American boxer was put into a coma on Saturday night (October 12) following a 10th round knockout during the super welterweight bout in Chicago.

In a statement from Promoter Lou DiBella, he confirmed the sad news as he said Patrick was “surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team.” He went on to say: “He was a son, brother and a good friend to many. Pat’s kindness, positivity, and generosity of spirit made a lasting impression with everyone he met.”

The day after the fight, fellow American Charles Conwell penned an emotional letter as he said: “I never meant this to happen to you, all I wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back, I would. No-one deserves this to happen to them.”

As the sad news broke, members of the boxing world have flooded social media to pay tribute to the young boxer, with Frank Bruno and Eddie Hearn amongst those sharing their condolences.
