Since the release of the first PlayStation back in the mid-nineties, gamers have referred to the button furthest south on the D-pad as ‘x’ but according to PlayStation themselves, we’ve been calling it by the wrong name.
Replying to a debate on Twitter regarding the name of the button, PlayStation UK confirmed the button is in fact the ‘cross’ button.
“If Cross is called X (it’s not), then what are you calling Circle?”, PlayStation UK tweeted to a user who – like most of us – believed the button is ‘x’.
However, judging by a new poll by the official PlayStation account, it looks like the majority of people will continue to call it ‘x’.
The poll which asked people what they call the button saw ‘x’ win with 81%, ‘+ rotated 45°’ in second with 11% and ‘cross’ taking the least votes with 8%.
Clearly, ‘cross’ isn’t popular so despite PlayStation’s efforts to clear up any confusion, ‘x’ still reigns supreme.
