UK police are hopeful that a new AI tool will revolutionise policing and help solve a backlog of cold cases.
Being used by Avon and Somerset Police is the Söze tool which was developed in Australia and can be used to analyse video, social media, emails, bank records and more.
In the trial by Avon and Somerset Police which used 27 complex cases, the AI tool was able to do what would take humans 81 years to do in just 30 hours.
The trial continues as officers look to see just how much this tool will assist their policing efforts.
Gavin Stephen, Chairman of the National Police Chiefs Council called the AI tool useful and said, “You might have a cold case review that just looks impossible because of the amount of material there and feed it into a system like this which can just ingest it, then give you an assessment of it. I can see that being really helpful.”
Gavin Stephen also called the tool a groundbreaking programme.
On their website, Söze said of its product, “Söze has been developed from the ground up in collaboration with police investigators to solve real policing problems and deliver tangible benefits that impact on policing results. One of the most useful benefits of Söze is the platform’s ability to discover avenues of potential interest, faster and more innovative and accurate than humans are capable of.”
