The late Pop Smoke will make his posthumous film debut next year in Eddie Huang’s Boogie, it has been confirmed.
Due for release on March 5th 2021, Boogie tells a coming of age story of high-school student Alfred “Boogie” Chin – played by Taylor Takahashi – who dreams of becoming a basketball star.
However, Boogie faces a few challenges on his way to greatness, such as his on-court rival Monk, who’s played by Pop Smoke. The film will also feature unreleased music from Pop, as well as a camero from fellow New York rapper, Dave East.
Speaking to the New York Times, director Huang spoke of Pop’s work ethic and energy.
“He gave me a thousand percent. They were tough 16-hour days, overnights, and he shot five overnights in a row. Kids were coming on the bridge to watch us shoot the scenes. We would play Pop’s record,” he said.
“All our actors, the extras, the kids on the bridge watching us shoot scenes, everyone was doing the Woo dance. It was pretty special.”
