To give workers a healthier work-life balance, Portugal has now passed a law that makes it illegal for bosses to message their remote-working employees after they’ve finished work for the day.

Under the new labour laws passed by Portugal’s Socialist Party, employers could face penalties if they contact their staff before or after they start their shift. However, the rule won’t apply to companies with fewer than ten staff.

Ana Mendes Godinho, Portugal’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, said they want to make working from home as smooth as possible for people in the country.

“The pandemic has accelerated the need to regulate what needs to be regulated,” she said.

“Telework can be a ‘game changer’ if we profit from the advantages and reduce the disadvantages.

“We consider Portugal one of the best places in the world for these digital nomads and remote workers to choose to live in, we want to attract them to Portugal.”

The good news for remote workers in Portugal doesn’t stop there as the government is now allowing people to expense utilities such as electricity and broadband.

So if you’re boss is always messaging you out of work hours and you want a better work-life balance, you just might want to head to Portugal!
