The ex-Newcastle United defensive midfielder collapsed after training with his current club, Beijing Enterprises in Chine, before being taken to hospital where he died. He was only 30 years old.
Fans and players alike are in shock as they mourn for the player. His former teammate, Demba Ba, tweeted a brief tribute to Tiote. He wrote, “May Allah gives grant you jannah brother Tiote,” complete with six crying emojis.
Tiote started his career in Belgium with Anderlect before moving to FC Twente. It was in 2010 that Newcastle aquired his signature, signing him for £3.5 million.
He left the Toon in January, where he made his move to China. He scored his sole goal in the Premiere League for the Magpies in February 2011 against Arsenal, in a hectic 4-4 draw.
The club have yet to release a statement on his death.
