Several high-profile footballers from the Premier League are currently supporting a 24-hour social media protest demanding platforms to do more to combat racism.

The protest is being called for by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) who are encouraging players to boycott Twitter, Instagram and Facebook from 9am today (19 April) to 9am tomorrow.

The campaign is urging football players to post “#ENOUGH” on their social media accounts before boycotting the platforms.

Among those taking part in the campaign is the Tottenham defender Danny rose who was racially abused during England’s recent game against Montenegro.

Of the campaign, Rose said: “I don’t want any future players to go through what I’ve been through in my career.

“Collectively, we are simply not willing to stand by while too little is done by football authorities and social media companies to protect players from this disgusting abuse.”

Joining Danny Rose in the protest is Manchester United’s Chris Smalling, Watford Skipper Troy Deeney and many more.

A few days ago, Twitter responded to racial abuse made to Manchester United players on their platform by releasing a statement.

A spokesperson for Twitter said: “While we welcome people to express themselves freely on Twitter, we do not tolerate behaviour that crosses the line into abuse, hateful conduct or harassment.”
