The U.S. Supreme Court has voted to overturn Roe Vs. Wade, the constitutional right for women to choose to have an abortion.

Under the move which acts as one of the most significant rulings in recent history, American states will no longer legally have to uphold this constitutional right and in response, several states have already outlawed abortion.

Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi are among the states who have trigger bans in place which means that as Roe Vs Wade has been overturned, abortion will automatically become illegal.

The controversial ruling saw support from the pro-life movement and condemnation from those who are pro-choice.

Pro-life senior Republican Kevin McCarthy said, “By a vote of six to three, the court affirmed that the power to protect unborn life is returned to the people, their elected representatives. The people have won a victory.

“The right to life has been vindicated, the voiceless will finally have a voice in this great nation can now live up to its core principle that all are created equal, not born equal, created equal.”

US President Joe Biden said in a statement, “The health and life of women in this nation are now at risk.

“I believe Roe v Wade was the correct decision as a matter of constitutional law and application of the fundamental right to privacy and liberty.”

“It was three justices named by one president, Donald Trump, at the core of today’s decision to upend the scale of justice and eliminate a fundamental right for women in this country.

“In my view, the court has done what has never been done before – expressly take away a constitutional right that is so fundamental to so many Americans.”

“It is a sad day for the court and a sad day for the country.”
