The memory of Folajimi Olubumni-Adewole, known as Jimi, who tragically lost his life attempting a heroic rescue in the Thames, will now be commemorated annually on Folajimi Day, April 24th.
Jimi’s courageous act, jumping into the river to save a woman who fell from London Bridge in April 2021, earned him recognition as “a man of courage and determination” by the coroner.
Folajimi Day seeks to honour Jimi’s selflessness and inspire others to acts of kindness and bravery. The inaugural gathering at Southwark’s Cathedral Square, where a plaque marks Jimi’s leap, convened attendees to pledge their time towards helping others in various capacities, echoing his spirit of altruism.
Living Bankside, a neighbourhood-improvement charity, plans to further honour Jimi’s legacy by dedicating Cathedral Square as a place for peace and reflection.
Jimi’s brother, Bolajj said, “We hope people will be inspired by his story and will be encouraged to volunteer and be selfless in his name. Helping others is the best way we can honour Folajimi.”
Through these initiatives, Jimi’s legacy lives on, reminding us all of the power of compassion and the enduring impact of acts of kindness.
