Few musicians manage to artistically encapsulate what it means to be a Londoner better than Sam Wise. From his days coming up as one of the youngest, but evidently promising members of House of Pharoahs, to today where he is finally beginning to receive his flowers as an individual icon of underground rap, this local essence has always been present. Whilst he hasn’t released a full length project for two years now, he’s remained a consistent output of singles, the latest of which is entitled “Last One Laughing”.

Featuring close friend and frequent collaborator kadiata, “Last One Laughing” is Wise at his best, rapping with maturity and consideration. kadiata provides his trademark vocals to create a multidimensional track, notably opting for a second verse as opposed to an obvious hook. The result is an extremely listenable song with bags of replay value, intended to remain on both old and new fan’s playlists for more than the foreseeable future. Even the artwork reflects the degree of thought that went into this record; Wise himself mentioned on his Instagram how it’s an oil painting made by painter and photographer Rachel Megawhat. The blue police van against the council estate backdrop is a stark but familiar image, and feels just right for this track.

It’s testament to his commitment to his craft that Wise only continues to get better as an artist, and the rest of 2023 promises only bigger and better things for one of South London’s finest.
