A prolific shoplifter with 171 convictions has been banned from all but three stores across a vast area of the North East of England.

Tanya Liddle, 43, has been arrested nearly 400 times by Northumbria Police, who say she has “plagued” the region for decades. Most of her convictions are related to shoplifting, often using disguises to avoid recognition.

One of her recent offenses took place at TK Maxx in Cramlington’s Westmorland Retail Park on April 24, where CCTV footage captured her stealing £1,500 worth of bags, concealed around her neck, hands and trolley.

Last week, Northumbria Police secured a civil injunction against Liddle at Newcastle Civil Court, banning her from entering any shops in the region, except for a pharmacy, supermarket and clothing retailer. The order covers more than 2,000 square miles, including the Scottish border to County Durham and the Pennines to the coast, marking the strictest injunction ever in the area.

Inspector Patrick Hannon commended the efforts of officers, stating the ruling reflects the seriousness of Liddle’s crimes and their impact on local retailers. “Liddle has exhausted every opportunity to change her ways, and this is the best way to manage her offending,” he said.

If Liddle breaches the order, she faces arrest and potential jail time. Police are urging the public to report any sightings of her in banned stores via social media or the live chat function on the force’s website.
